Decsription

Mahaweli Maha Seya the second largest stupa in Sri Lanka is located in the Kotmale area, 42 km from Nuwara Eliya. If you are traveling from Nuwaraeliya the winding roads parallel to the Kotamale Reservoir provides a panoramic view of the surroundings. On your way, you will be able to witness the glimpses of the bright white Stupa in the upland.

Mahaweli Maha Seya construction was completed in 2016. It was built as a dedicatory and to compensate for the loss of many temples submerged during the construction of the Dams under the Mahaweli development project. The ruins of those submerged temples of Kadadora Vihara, Thispane Vihara, Othalawa Vihara, Madagoda Vihara, and Morape Devalaya can still be spotted when the water level of Kotmale Reservoir was receded.
