The area is characterised by its diverse ecosystems, including light forests, scrubs, grasslands, tanks, and lagoons. These habitats provide a sanctuary for numerous animal species. Yala is best known for its leopard population, which is believed to have one of the highest leopard densities in the world. It is also a great place to go bird-watching.
