Description

Anuradhapura is a part of the “Cultural Triangle“ in Sri Lanka to gather with Polonnaruwa and Kandy. That represents the core of the once-impressive ancient Sri Lankan kingdoms which flourished in the country before external forces overwhelmed them. Anuradhapura is located 205 km north of Colombo.

Anuradhapura was the first ancient capital and the first established kingdom of Sri Lanka. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

The Kingdom of Anuradhapura had the most technologically advanced civilizations of its' days. The creation of enormous tanks was an extraordinary accomplishment. These reservoirs were designed to capture the rains of the monsoon and then slowly distribute the water among the kingdom’s farms, using a complicated and highly advanced irrigation system.

The wealth generated by the Anuradhapura kingdom’s economy, at its peak, was such that it was able to serve more than eight thousand Buddhist monks and surround them. At the same time, they were able to build massive religious structures. Those ultimately became the largest human-made structures of the ancient world next to the pyramids at Giza.

Read more on the Anuradhapura Kingdom:

https://www.fantasiatours.com/blogs/view-blog/anuradhapura-kingdom-history-of-sri-lanka
