<ul>Nagadeepa or Nainativu is one of the smallest inhabited islands in the country. Nainativu is the 4 island on the Palk Strait towards India. The first three, Kayts, Karaitivu, and Punkudutiv join up with the mainland by causeways. A ferry service started at the Kurikadduwan jetty on Punkudutivu Island for Nainativu every 30 minutes.<br>
<br>The Buddhist and the Hindu temples on the island venerated by Buddhists and Hindus, the most. Nagadeepa is the place where Lord Buddha came during his second visit to Sri Lanka. <ul><p> Kelaniya temple is one of the most venerated temples in Sri Lanka. It was visited by Lord Buddha during his 3rd visit to Sri Lanka. According to the chronicles, Kelaniya Stupa was built enshrined in a gem-studded throne on which the Buddha sat and preached. <br>
<br>Soliyas Mendis, an artist with extraordinary talent in the modern era, has decorated the ceiling of the Kelaniya temple. <ul>Kataragama is a pilgrimage town famous not only Sri Lanka but also South India. That is due to the Kataragama temple was dedicated to Murugan or Kataragama Deviyo. Kirivehera stupa built in 6th century BC is adjoining to the Kataragama temple.</br>
The Esala Perahera in Kataragama is a colorful event in the month of July. Most interesting events in the festival are the processions that occur in festival period nights with fascinating and colourful cultural dances and age-old rituals, music and dressed up the elephant and the fire walking ceremony.</br>
<br>During the fire walking ceremony devotees were walking through a bed of tamarind firewood lit and embers glow red and gold. It is said that those of the purest faith never get burned.

<ul>Adam's Peak has located in the Peak Wilderness Nature Reserve, 32 km southwest of Hatton. Adam’s Peak is the 4th highest mountain in Sri Lanka with a height of 2,243 m. It is named "Sripada" by the Sri Lankans. It has also called "Samanala Kanda" or Butterfly Mountain because of the long flights of butterflies that are fly towards the summit of the mountain during their annual migrations on the months of March and April.<br>
<br>Adam's Peak is a highly venerated pilgrimage site for Sri Lankans. The oversized footprint carved in stone at the summit of the peak is the most important and most venerated item in Adam's Peak. However, the religious significance of Adam’s Peak greatly depends on who you are? If you are a <br>
<br><b>Buddhists</b> – considered the footprint is the left foot of Buddha<br>
<br><b>Hindus</b> – considered the footprint belongs, Lord Shiva<br>
<br><b>Muslims & Christians</b> – considered as the first step of Adam after being exiled from the Garden of Eden<br>
<br>Whatever your belief, start walking up to the peak at midnight. Because you will be at the summit in the morning. Witnessing the sunrise in the morning is nothing short of spectacular. Sri Lankan's are calling it "Ira Sewaya"<br>
<br>There are six trails to the Sripada summit. That includes the more renowned:<br>
<br>Hatton – Nallathanni trail,
<br>Rathnapura – Palabattala trail and
<br>Kuruwita – Erathna trail<br>
<br>and lesser-known<br>
<br>Deraniyagala - Uda Maliboda trail,
<br>Murraywatte - Rajamale - Sandagalathenna trail, and
<br>Hapugastenne - Mookuwatte trail
All of which is more of just footpaths in the jungle. </ul> |
