-the fortified old city of colonists-

    Galle is located 119 km south of Colombo. It was a seaport and main entrepot for the spices since ancient times. Ibn Battuta, a Moroccan traveler was visited Galle in 1342. The whole gamut of Galle and Sri Lanka was changed when a fleet of Portuguese ships was unexpectedly blown off to Galle in 1505 that started the 443 years of the colonial era in Sri Lanka.

MOST STRIKING FEATURES


    The old town of Galle and its fortifications, the World Heritage Site is Asia’s largest remaining fortress built by European occupiers. The Portuguese initially built a basic fort in Galle. When the Dutch started their control over the area they rebuilt and extensively fortified the fort according to their specifications. A lot of historical, archaeological, and architectural colonial remains are there in Galle fort and the surrounding area. Even today the colonial-era buildings inside the fort, functioning as villas, antique shops, cafes, and restaurants without changing their old fashion.
