Buttala is located 247 km east of Colombo. It is a rural village with a lot of historical and natural treasures. Buttala has first mentioned in the 2nd century BC during King Dutugemunu fought against south Indian invaders. The ancient chronicle Mahavamsa has stated that King’s army passes through the “Guthala” area. That is how the Buttala is known at that time.

MOST STRIKING FEATURES


    The Menik Ganga (river of the gem) and Kumbukkan Oya pass through Buttala providing treasure for the area. The riversides of those rivers and the Okkampitiya area close to Buttala are among the hotspots in gem mining in Sri Lanka and famous for the beautiful gemstone.
