MAHIYANGANAYA

-the old city of “Yakka” (devils) tribes-

Mahiyanganaya is located on the bank of the Mahaweli River, 224 km northeast of Colombo. The Mahiyangana and the large surrounding area have called “Bintenna” according to the Sinhala language because the word Mahiyangana is a Pali word. Bintenna literally means flat land. Actually, the area is relatively flat after the steep drop of the central hills. Due to the home of the “Veddha” clan and the first visit of the Lord Buddha, Mahiyanganaya has known to the world.

MOST STRIKING FEATURES


    The road that links central parts of the country to the eastern parts are called 18-hairpin bends road or popularly known as “Daha Ata Wanguwa” road. This 108 km long, A-26 road from Kandy to Padiyatalawa through Digana, Teldeniya, Medamahanuwara, Hunnasgiriya, Udadumbara Passara, and Mahiyanaganaya has been considered the most beautiful and most difficult motorway in the country. The 55 km is the starting point of the zigzag 18-hairpin bends. The height of that point is 662 m above sea level where a large viewing platform for visitors. The travellers who travel on this road do not forget to brief stopover at the long and winding road and enjoy the picturesque view capture it forever.
