    Kandy is located on a plateau surrounded by mountains, about 116 km from Colombo. “Senkadagala” was the last capital of the last remaining kingdom of Sri Lanka from 1592 to 1815. In the colonial period people called this area “Kanda” in Sinhala while foreigners pronouncing this word as “Kandy”, subsequently, the area was named Kandy.

MOST STRIKING FEATURES


    “Sri Dalada Maligawa” or Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the most venerated temple in the whole Buddhist world is housed in the Kandy. It is the house for Relic of the Tooth of the Lord Buddha. Dalada Maligawa was nominated as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
