    Tissamaharama, located 260 km south of Colombo was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Ruhuna. Five reservoirs named Tissa Wewa, Yoda Wewa, Weerawila Wewa, Pannegamuwa Wewa, and Debarawewa Wewa are part of the ancient irrigation system in the area. Ancient Tissamaharama temple is at the heart of the city. Fascinating beaches, important natural attractions of Bundala and Yala national parks, and ancient ruins are surrounded in Tissamaharama.

MOST STRIKING FEATURES


    Tissamaharama temple was one of the four main Buddhist monasteries in ancient Sri Lanka. It is said that Lord Buddha was consecrated Tissamaharama temple during his third visit to Sri Lanka. If you are there you will be able to understand how Buddhist temples influence the coordination of water management, ritual performance, and village settlement as you are witnessing the temple, paddy field around the temple, adjoining water tank, and village.
