    Trincomalee is located 287 km northeast of Colombo on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka. Lord Horatio Nelson, the British admiral of the 18th century, had arrived in Trincomalee harbour and described it as the finest natural harbour in the world. It was a busy harbour since ancient times. At that time it was known as “Gokanna Harbour”.

MOST STRIKING FEATURES


    Koneshwaram Hindu Temple situated atop of the Swami Rock is a classical medieval Hindu temple devoted to God Shiva, contains ornate shrines and a massive statue of Shiva.

    According to Chronicles, King Mahasen was built Gokanna Viharaya in the 3rd century AD at the top of the rock.
